Sutter, John Augustus Sutter, John Augustus, 1803â€"80, American pioneer, b. Kandern, Baden, of Swiss parents. His original name was Johann August Suter. He emigrated to the United States in 1834, went to St. Louis, then to Santa Fe. Fired with a desire to go to the Pacific coast, he went to the Oregon country and entered the coast trade in the Northwest, going to the Hawaiian Islands, to Sitka, Alaska, and finally (1839) to California. He settled in the Sacramento valley and obtained large grants of land from the Mexican governor of California. There he established his colony, known as New Helvetia, and built Sutter's Fort (see Sacramento ). Rich and powerful, Sutter helped many newcomers to California. In 1848, James W. Marshall found gold while building a sawmill on Sutter's land. The news spread, and gold-mad crowds poured across the continent in the rush of 1849. They killed Sutter's cattle and swarmed over his lands hunting for gold. He struggled against them in vain, and moved E to Pennsylvania , a ruined man, in 1873. He had earlier been granted a pension from California, and to the end he hoped that the U.S. Congress would reimburse him for his losses. Superheroes, despite their different powers, all possess similar characteristics that define them, such as courage, honesty, selflessness, and the maintenance of strong morals. Similarly, King Lear, the tragic hero in William Shakespeare’s play, King Lear, possesses characteristics that define him as a tragic hero, as stated by Aristotle in Poetics via A.C. Bradley’s The Shakespearean Tragic Hero. King Lear is a character of high social status, and he possesses exceptional qualities that make him a well-respected king; however, throughout the play’s events, he suffers tremendously in an unusual manner. In addition, Lear, despite being a â€Å"good† character with good intentions, possesses a tragic flaw – his pride which ultimately blinds him†¦show more content†¦However, as the play progresses, his suffering that is caused by the impulsive decision to divide his kingdom is clearly seen. This suffering is illustrated through the loss of his sanity, ultimately due to the sudden loss of his power, his deteriorating relationships with his daughters, and the inability to prevent these negative outcomes. Upon realizing his mistake of solely letting Regan and Goneril inherit his kingdom, Lear is â€Å"ashamed that [his daughters have the] power to shake [his] manhood† (I.iv.299-301). His daughters, who are women and are therefore considered to be less important and powerful in his society, have taken control of Lear’s power and life, and it is embarrassing to him as he is used to receiving constant honour, pride, and glory as the King. This illustrates the start of him losing his sanity, and soon, Lear is seen pleading to the gods to â€Å"keep [him] in temper† and to â€Å"not [let him] be mad,† as he is stripped away from all that is his (I.v.43-44). As King Lear pleads for help to maintain his sanity, his sufferings are clearly illustrated as the change in his character is evident; a change fr om a virtuous, powerful king, to a mentally unstable, powerless, and embarrassed beggar-like character. Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development details eight different stages describing a healthy human’s development from infancy to late adulthood. Each stage presents a new conflict between a biological and sociocultural force. Successful negotiation of these forces results in the individual moving the next stage with the favored attribute. Their intimate, reciprocal relationship has made Greg willing to make sacrifices and compromises required to make her happy and their relationship function. Since Greg has been able to form an intimate relationship with Pam, intimacy has prevailed over isolation. Jack Byrnes is in middle adulthood; his internal conflict is generativity vs. stagnation. What first captured my attention when I glanced around the class was not the lack of an air conditioner or the huge poster of the Eiffel Tower; it was the populace scattered within the class. Room 103 was a nut tin of vibrant snakes. There were people of all shapes and sizes. There were bulky business men in suites and tiny aunties with handbags twice their size. To me Rachel was a red bouncy ball in a sea of black ones. I had a gazillion questions to be answered and a million myths to be debunked. Rachel was a patient being, and every morning, after our customary ‘Bonjours’ she would stroll with me in the sweltering corridors and talk. She told me how she celebrated Easter and how she longed for a White Christmas. The difference in our religion was far from a hindrance; instead it opened up more waters for us to navigate as we both strove to fill to early French-free hours. Despite being as different as black and white, when these wonderfully unique people heard of my mission to read the gripping French novel, they appointed themselves as my chaperones. The New Jersey Devil The urban legend I chose to write about for this assignment is the story of the Jersey Devil. The Jersey Devil is a creature that was, according to legend, born from a woman in southern New Jersey and it is supposed to have haunted the people of the surrounding area for at least 260 years. The Jersey Devil is known as a creature that mutilates livestock as well as other animals and is said to appear shortly before disasters occur. I was able to listen to two versions of the story surrounding the Jersey Devil while conducting research for this assignment. The first story teller is an 18 year old female from Rockaway, New Jersey. This town is a suburban community in northern New Jersey with the majority of residents belonging to the economic middle class. I collected this story during a trip to see my parents on April 1, 2006 at the story teller’s home. She told me the story shortly after dinner so it was nearly dark when she told me the story. The second story teller is a 15 year old female that is also from Rockaway, New Jersey. This story teller also told me the story of the Jersey Devil on April 1, 2006, and also delivered the story from her home during dinner. When the first story teller, the 18 year old female, began to tell me her version of the story of the Jersey Devil, she first said that she did not know much about the legend. She then explained to me that the Jersey Devil is an animal-like creature that lives in the Pine Barrens (the Pine Barrens is a sparsely populated, wooded area of southern New Jersey). He has been seen by many different people who have camped in the area, and he has killed several campers over many years. She finished her story by saying that he is very scary and that she has been afraid of the Jersey Devil for years. When I asked her where she heard this story, she told me that she could not remember but she did remember hearing about the story while she was in elementary school. The second story teller, the 15 year old female, also stated that she did not really know much about the Jersey Devil. She started by saying that he lives in the woods, and then corrected herself by saying that he lives in the Pine Barrens in southern New Jersey.
